Get Involved

Only This Much is a campaign to advance the protection of our oceans around South Africa. Only 5% of our oceans are safe in marine protected areas and it is not enough.

This campaign will build support amongst public and ocean stakeholders for marine protected areas, by creating awareness of their value for provision of ecosystem services, ocean risk mitigation, food security, ecotourism benefits, moderation of climate change and improving resilience to impacts of other global stressors.

How can I help?

Join Only This Much online: Please join the campaign online to help us share updates, photos and news stories across South Africa – and the world!

Not enough people know about our 5% ocean protection and that, by simply spreading awareness, they can help – please get involved and spread our message.

MIND YOUR CONSUMPTION
2
Reduce the effects of climate change on the ocean by decreasing your carbon footprint and energy consumption. Walk to work, switch to fluorescent lightbulbs and avoid using a heater or air conditioner.
MAKE SAFE, SUSTAINABLE SEAFOOD CHOICES
3
Download the APP here. When shopping or dining out, help reduce the demand for overexploited species by choosing seafood that is sustainable.
USE LESS PLASTIC
4
Limit your impact by carrying a reusable water bottle, storing food in reusable containers, bringing your own reusable/fabric bag when shopping and recycle.
TAKE CARE OF BEACHES
5
Always clean up after yourself and explore and appreciate the ocean without interfering with wildlife or removing rocks and coral. Go even further by encouraging others to respect the marine environment or by participating in local beach clean-ups.
BE AWARE OF YOUR PURCHASES
6
Avoid purchasing items such as coral jewellery, tortoise-shell hair accessories (made from hawksbill turtles) and shark products.
BE AN OCEAN-FRIENDLY PET OWNER
7
Read pet food labels and consider seafood sustainability when choosing a diet for your pet. Never flush cat litter and avoid stocking your aquarium with wild-caught saltwater fish.
LEND YOUR SUPPORT
8
Find a national organization and consider giving financial support or volunteering for hands-on work or advocacy. If you live near the coast, join up with a local branch or group and get involved in projects close to home.
TRAVEL RESPONSIBLY
9
Practice responsible boating, kayaking, and other recreational activities on the water. Never throw anything overboard and be aware of marine life in the waters around you. If you’re set on taking a cruise for your next vacation do some research and find the most eco-friendly option.
GET EDUCATED
10
All life on earth is connected to the ocean and its inhabitants. The more you learn about the issues facing this vital system, the more you’ll want to help ensure its health. Then, share that knowledge to educate and inspire others.
